The Need

In Harare, Zimbabwe, nearly 500,000 children of primary and secondary school age are out of school due to severe economic hardships. The education crisis is further compounded by low school completion rates and the challenge of retaining students, particularly at higher educational levels. Disadvantaged schools in Harare face critical issues, including crumbling infrastructure, a severe shortage of teaching materials, and inadequate resources for both students and teachers.

A growing crisis of childhood hunger further hinders students’ ability to learn, as the majority of children in these schools begin their day without breakfast and go without lunch. According to UNICEF and Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC), the issue of child malnutrition is worsening, impacting students’ health, concentration, and academic performance.

Additionally, the mandatory requirement for school uniforms, which cost $30 to $50 USD, is beyond the financial means of many low-income families. This policy disproportionately affects underprivileged students, leading to social exclusion, a loss of confidence, and higher school dropout rates.

Our Response

Advancing Africa Through Education is committed to addressing the urgent educational challenges in Harare, Zimbabwe, by implementing sustainable and impactful solutions. We partner with local businesses to provide daily nutritious meals to disadvantaged schools, ensuring students can focus on learning without the distraction of hunger. Our organization offers school uniform assistance to promote inclusion and reduce social exclusion, while also replacing outdated and inadequate textbooks with effective learning materials to enhance educational quality.

To support long-term improvements, we collaborate with schools on income-generating projects that help upgrade school infrastructure, improve facilities, and supplement operational expenses. Our ultimate goal is to establish a state-of-the-art learning center equipped with a study hall, library resources, and electronic devices, empowering students to excel academically and achieve their full potential.
